Commodores Fitting Out Dinner 2019 – Saturday 16th March 2019 – 1930-2300
Dear members,
Firstly may I thank all those of you that took part in the survey. Its great to get feed back. Having considered the response and discussed with a good many members, we have decided to go with the outside caterers option.
I think, most of you will agree to try and cook a three course meal from volunteers would be a tall order, as well as the considerable time and stress put on them, they also wouldn’t be able to enjoy the evening.
We are always aware of the cost when organising such events but this is a once a year event and should be a time to come together as a club and celebrate together.
Should you have any questions then please feel free to contact me.
Many Thanks
John Rushmer

Participatory Hours 2019 Tasks

Slipway Cleaning

A volunteer is sought to clean the slipway, this should be the last time members will have to do this as a contractor will be taking over in 2019.  If you can assist with this please contact rcsailing@hythesailingclub.co.uk or if you are already on the slipway cleaning team list please attend the club and complete as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for completing this task.

Tractor Driver Volunteers 2019

There is now a book in the wet room for Tractor Drivers to volunteer to launch and recover boats in 2019.  If you are an authorised driver or recently attended the tractor driver training session at the club please add your name and dates you are available when you know when that will be.  There will soon be an online booking system for owners of boats to book their launch and recovery, updates regarding this to follow.

Please make sure you remove the ladder from your boat when you leave it. It makes it easier for anyone to break in to your boat or to use it to get on to someone else’s boat.

Waterside Primary
We are having a drive on developing ‘reading for pleasure’ with our children. (Research evidence clearly shows that reading for pleasure has a direct bearing on children’s attainment and life chances. Regular reading for pleasure has been shown to have more impact upon attainment than a child’s socio-economic status. However, the UK recently ranked 47 out of 65 nations in terms of the number of children who regularly read for enjoyment (60% of young people, compared to 90% in China for example).
One action within our plan to develop a love of reading is to redecorate our library which currently is looking very uninspiring. Nautical themes run through our school. We have Pirate characters that promote positive learning behaviours and as such we want to theme the room to a nautical/pirate theme.
The teachers will give up their time to paint the room over a weekend, hopefully with some parent support, and we are looking to collect ‘nauticalia’ to decorate the room. For example, old buoys, ropes etc. High on our wish list is to get hold of an unwanted tender or small dinghy that could be made into a place to sit and read.
As such, my request really is to find out if you have any unwanted stuff that you could donate to us for our library?

Dinghy, Assistant and Senior Instructors Sought

As part of our “Year of the Dinghy” Project, HSC is sponsoring qualifying members to train for the RYA Assistant Instructor (AI) and Dinghy Instructor (DI) Qualification, by covering some of the costs of the RYA Training and Assessment Courses.

As part of that commitment, the AI and DI trainees will be required to assist with a minimum of 6 (or possibly 8) of the 12 HSC youth dinghy training sessions planned for this year.  DI and AI training candidates will also need to attend a First Aid Course and obtain a VHF operating qualification.

If you are interested in taking up this great offer of assistance with obtaining an RYA AI or DI Qualification whilst assisting our youth training sessions in 2019 or if you require further information, please contact Tim Harrison, rcsaling@hythesailingclub.co.uk as soon as possible.

Volunteers needed

If you need to build up your contributory work hours, please consider volunteering for the following work this year:
Volunteer needed to carry out some basic maintenance work on the Club Safety boats:

  • Add a retaining strap to secure the portable fuel tank on the large Safety Boat Rib
  • Replace the throw ropes on the three Safety Boats and install them

Volunteer to regularly check the correct storage and maintenance requirements on our Safety Boats and to highlight when there is any work or corrective action needed.
Volunteer needed to assist with organising events for the new Kayak Club Section
Volunteer needed to assist with the organisation of Cruiser Rallies:  There are 6 Rallies organised for 2019.  If you would like to organise just one of the Rallies, please contact Tim Harrison.

If you are interested in any of the above HSC contributory work opportunities, please contact Tim Harrison rcsailing@hythesailingclub.co.uk or call 07879 491230.

Training Courses Update
The Day Skipper course is about half way through with everyone just getting back to it after the Christmas break.  The trainer has the availability to run a second course in conjunction with Eling Sailing club on weekends at the end of February and during March.   Please let me know if you are interested.
First Aid Course. and Sea Survival Course, I have put a list up in the lobby for these courses, please add you name if you are interested and I will organise them.  The Sea Survival course is held in a local swimming pool and is well worth doing to see how difficult it is to get into a life raft as well as lots of information about survival at sea.
VHF Radio Course, Saturday 23rd February , please add you name to the list in the lobby if you are interested.
Many thanks Julie email training@hythesailingclub.co.uk
