On August 15, 1620 the Mayflower and the Speedwell sailed away from Southampton bound for the new world with 102 pilgrims on board. That journey was a key event in the founding of America. To commemorate the voyage the UK, USA and Holland are planning a year-long programme of events.

As part of the national Mayflower 400 programme Southampton the City Council has taken this opportunity to highlight Southampton’s cultural, maritime and heritage assets to members of our community as well as visitors from across the UK, the Netherlands and the USA.  The Royal Southampton Yacht Club has be invited by the city to take a key role in the maritime events.

We will play leading role in organising a Grand Parade of Sail in Southampton Water and a Yacht Rally from Southampton to Plymouth visiting other ports on the south coast on the way following the trail of the original ships. The parade of sail will take place on Sunday, August 16 and the start of the flotilla leaving for Plymouth will be on Monday, August 17.

We are working with Dartmouth and Plymouth, who were also ports of call for the Mayflower and Speedwell, and part of Mayflower 400 celebrations to take part in their events during the voyage.
We will keep you updated on the events and information from Mayflower 400 in this bulletin during the year. In the meantime please save the dates in your diary and join the Parade of Sail and the Flotilla to Plymouth.

Royal Southampton Yacht Club is involved in the planning and organisation of the maritime events to commemorate the anniversary in 2020.

These include:

Parade of Sail in Southampton Water – probably with three Cunard Queens and 20 tall ships along with yachts and other craft taking part

Year 5 on the Water – aim to get every year 5 pupil onto the water with a legacy to continue this each year.

RSYC Mayflower Trail Rally – We hope to have a rally with starting points in The Thames and Rotterdam visiting ports on passage to a rally muster in Southampton. After taking part in the Parade of Sail and other M400 shore based events the flotilla would depart to Dartmouth and Plymouth taking part in events at those ports. Yachts will be able to join or leave the rally at any point. The probable departure date from Southampton will be August 15, 2020 – the date Mayflower and Speedwell left Southampton 400 years ago.

For more information on the global celebrations and history please go to the Mayflower 400 website.
